Bat survey of listed building, Swindon

Bat survey of listed building, Swindon

Bat survey on a Grade II Listed building in Swindon helped our client achieve planning permission for the restoration and renovation of a historic manor and coach house. And to provide a net gain for biodiversity.

The scope of our surveys included Preliminary Roost Assessment and bat activity surveys. These elements were both used to inform a detailed planning application. Given the complexity of the site, we led a team of 8 surveyors to ensure that all aspects of the site were observed. Our full ecological impact assessment enabled our client to submit a planning application and, once a mitigation licence obtained, begin the restoration.

We also advise on lighting issues relating to bats. Some light-sensitive bat species are often disturbed by bad lighting design. Our specialists provided input to a lighting design, prescribing a range of simple and inexpensive avoidance and mitigation measures.

The project also provided additional net biodiversity gains for both bats and nesting birds. We provided ecological clerk of work duties during the installation of biodiversity features and supervisory works during licensed works. Biodiversity features included providing bat and bird boxes and a bespoke bat roost within the Coach House.

We specialise in helping our clients identify ecological issues with historic buildings and estates. This bat survey in Swindon is one example where our expertise in project management and ecological assessment used the skills of our licensed and experienced team. Being involved during the first design stages is crucial for a successful outcome. Having a great team around you also helps. We work with architects and stakeholders to ensure delivery of your project!

Works on complex sites may also need onward support, including mitigation licence applications. These are either applied for in Wales to Natural Resources Wales or in England to Natural England.
