Motorway Routine Inspection and Maintenance, South Wales

Sector: Highways

Client: South Wales Trunk Road Agent (SWTRA)

Location: Bridgend, South Wales

The client’s remit is for managing, maintaining and improving the strategic road network in South Wales. Advice was sought for an emergency replacement of expansion joints on the M4 Kenfig Viaduct, South Wales.

On behalf of the client Wildwood Ecology:

  • Undertook dusk emergence and pre-dawn roost characterisation surveys, confirming the presence of a high conservation status roost.
  • Guided the client in discussions with the local planning authority and Natural Resources Wales to produce a pragmatic solution to enable maintenance works to be undertaken.
  • Prepared a European Protected Species mitigation licence application and obtained an emergency licence within seven days of application.
  • Implemented a series of mitigation measures including new roost creation, novel capture and exclusion techniques, safety measures and post-development monitoring.

Following specialist advice, road expansion joints on the Kenfig Viaduct were successfully replaced or repaired and safety issues fully addressed.
